Vegetables And Meat

Try to imagine Christmas without the Christmas pudding. Or Easter without eggs. Or Thanksgiving without turkey… This would be an unusual picture for most people. And all these holidays would not be the holidays that we all know without the traditional meals we are so used to. Such a comparison may seem exaggerated, but this is the way our body feels without the proper nourishment given by vegetables, meat and fruit.

People must eat meat, vegetables and fruit because this is the way God created us. We are born omnivores. If later in life we choose not to be, this is another story. But a healthy diet is a balanced diet that includes meat, vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs, milk, and nuts.

There are many reasons why people should eat meat. Meat represents an important part of a person’s diet. It is essential to eat meat if we want our body and mind to function properly. If we take into consideration the food pyramid, at the bottom there is the bread, cereal, rice and pasta group, above it there are the fruit group and the vegetables group, above these two there are the milk, yogurt, cheese group and the meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts group. At the top of the pyramid there is the fats, oils and sweets group.

Meat may come in many forms and colors, but it is broadly classified as white meat (chicken, turkey) and red meat (cow, sheep, horse). Fish is considered neither meat nor a dairy food mainly for religious reasons. Christians have the restriction not to eat meat on Wednesdays, Fridays and Lent, and this restriction does not apply to fish, so it is allowed to eat fish on these days.

Meat is rich in protein, essential amino acids, vitamins (B12, B6, K2), minerals (iron most of all, zinc, phosphorus, selenium, etc.). But the kind of meat we eat is very important. We should not eat salami, sausages, hamburgers, etc. as they have much fat and lead to high levels of cholesterol. The meat we eat should be organic, hormone and antibiotic free. It is also important how much meat we eat every day. The quantities vary from one person to another and depend on everybody’s needs.

Vegetables are also very important in a person’s diet as they contain many nutritive substances such as fibers, vitamins, minerals, and little fat or proteins. They also contain antioxidants which are said to work miracles.

When going shopping, we should always choose fresh meat and fresh vegetables and we should avoid frozen or ready-to-eat food. If we don’t feel like going shopping, we can always order our food online or by phone.

Eating a healthy diet formed of meat, vegetables and fruits can help people lower the risk of heart diseases, some cancers, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. People should give more importance to the food they eat and how they eat it. Eat only fresh food, in acceptable quantities and you will have a healthy body and mind!
