I recently heard from someone who was interested in the Medifast diet but she anticipated a potential problem with it. In short, she was a fun loving, hard working young women who wanted to be able to go out with her friends and coworkers on Friday nights and enjoy a meal and good times. She did not want for her diet to limit her ability to do this.
She said in part: "There are just times when I'm going to want to go out with my girlfriends and have a nice meal. There are just special occasions and events that I don't want to miss. this summer.I don't want to eat celery sticks at the reception.My girlfriend is going to graduate from law school.Do I have to go to her party and drink water? If I go on Medifast, with these type of splurges be allowed or will I have to constantly deny myself these type of things? I mean, is it OK to throw caution to the wind sometimes and eat what you want? " I will try to address all of these concerns in the following article.
There's Not A Lot Of Guidance About Well Meaning Splurges On Medifast, But Here's My Opinion: Medifast sends you a lot of information when you start the diet and there's also a lot of guidance (as well as free counseling) on the site to guide you as you make choices. And, not surprisingly, there isn't a lot of information there on cheating or these types of splurges.
So while I can't speak for the company and tell you how they might answer these questions (and I'm certainly no expert,) I can tell you my own experiences and opinions. I don't think it's realistic to expect that you are going to adhere to the diet with 100% accuracy every single day. But you should try to do the best that you can.
I most certainly splurge from time to time. I don't feel guilty if I want to enjoy good food with family and friends because I know that most of the time, I'm on the diet and doing what I am supposed to do. I can look at my results and know that one day or one meal is not going to ruin everything. The next day, I just resume my normal Medifast meals and carry on.
Does this thwart my results? It has but it usually doesn't. I suppose it's because this has just become a habit for me and just moving on has become sort of automatic. And I'm fully aware that if I make the process one that I dread where I know I can't have some fun once in a while, then I'm going to lose my enthusiasm for it.
Tips On Making Smart (And Less Costly) Splurges While On Medifast: With the above said, I think it's best to plan at least a little and to understand how Medifast works so that you make the smartest choice at the time. You lose weight in a couple of different ways on Medifast. The idea is that you are taking in fewer calories, carbs, and fats while at the same taking in more protein and fiber and then getting into ketosis where this whole combination encourages your body to burn fat.
This process usually happens within the first week or so as long as you chose your "lean and green" meals wisely. You want to be careful with your carbs, calories, and sugars when you're choosing your protein and vegetables. But assuming you do this, the weight should begin to come off decently pretty quickly. That's why I recommend timing any slight cheating until you know that you're past this point.
The reason for this is that in my experience, it's easier to navigate yourself down a mountain than up it. Once the momentum of ketosis is behind you, things become much easier. You don't want to stall that process if you can help it. But once you have a few weeks behind you, then I don't think the diet police are going to come running if you allow yourself some liberties every once in a while.
You can always save your lean and green meal for the time in the day when you know you're going to need it. And, if you have a choice as to how you are going to cheat, I think that splurging with fats is better than with sugar. Too many carbs and you'll have to get back into ketosis. That's why I'll embrace the potato skins before I reach for the pie, but every one is different.
Again, take this for what it is worth and test for yourself, but I think an occasional splurge is fine. I do it myself and it hasn't seemed to set me back any, although common sense tells you that you want to see for yourself and you want to space out any cheating with much more compliance in between.
