It wasn't too long ago that many said exercise would help people eat less by decreasing their appetite. Now many are saying that exercise will make you eat more by increasing your appetite.
To make matters worse, most of us can recall times when we have exercised and not felt like eating, and other times when we wanted to devour a bread truck. I believe the answer is not in the details of the exercise, but rather something much more general. Something that's rarely addressed when discussing not only weight loss, but also our well being and entire quality of life.
I'm talking about your energy level. So many people give so much attention to whether our metabolism is slow or fast. I say I couldn't care less if I have a slow metabolism, just so long as my energy level is high.
Energy is king. Without it you're sunk regardless of what diet and exercise program you're using.
A high energy level promotes more calorie burning activity and keeps the appetite in check. Just think back to times in your life where you were bouncing off the walls with excitement – like right before a big first date. All you wanted to do was move around and food was the last thing on your mind.
A low energy level encourages the appetite and snuffs activity. A good example would be when you get home from a long day of work and all you want to do is order take-out and plop down in front of the TV.
This is just one of the reasons why I really don't like exhaustive workout routines. There have been many times that I've "been good" and worked out long and hard, only to go home, sit on the couch and eat ice cream.
So I say don't worry so much about metabolism – it takes considerable time and effort to change it. On the other hand, your energy level can change drastically with a good night's sleep, a healthy lunch and a good laugh with an old friend.
Energy can also plummet from too much stress, sitting still while staring at a screen, and eating an all Little Debbie lunch.
So instead of worrying about your metabolism and such, focus on anything and everything that boosts your energy level through the roof. I promise you, you're life, your weight loss success, and your health will improve right along with a corresponding increase in your energy level.
