One of the biggest health concerns that most developed countries experience today is obesity. This is simply saying it needs more awareness and education. It is not that hard to overcome this with some knowledge and just a little bit of will power. Most of the people in this situation are just oblivious or don’t understand the facts, that this is possible only through changes. It is proven fact that the biggest percentage of illness and diseases is food related.

Being overweight can lead to dramatic health complications such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which can become fatal later in life. Secondary to that, health concerns like hypertension and even osteoarthritis develop due to excess weight. For many people looking at quick fixes such as diet pills etc. this will be of no benefit. There are these health conditions associated with obesity and the best way to change it is with a healthy eating plan. Yes, it all begins in disciplining your attitude towards food, because correct food is mainly consumed as the body’s fuel. In fact, even people who don’t need to lose weight should consider a healthy eating plan.

Why? Because this helps them from developing metabolic disorders later on. If you start right with your food intake, then you need not worry about blood chemistry results later in your life. While most of your peers would complain of soaring blood sugar levels or high uric acid, you would still be eating any food you want. So, what is the key to a healthy eating plan? Here are some pointers worth considering that can lead to a healthy lifestyle.

• Choose natural food sources. Simple food, because it should mainly supply your body’s needs for growth and repair. This would mean avoiding processed foods heavily laden with sodium, sugars and who knows what other additives. Preserved food like canned goods is also included and better be avoided. Although do not confuse this with fermented food. Include plenty of them to your healthy eating plan; fermented food has many health benefits. Preservatives are not suitable for human consumption, especially when ingested for a long period.

• Detoxify your body once in a while. This could mean fasting for a day using home-made juice and fruits; however, prolonged periods of fasting can cause electrolyte imbalance so be careful about this. Detoxification must also involve exercise because our body detoxifies when we perspire. Some sort of exercise is necessary every day, no matter how little; of course more is always better.

• Hydrate well. This is a must for any healthy eating plan. You can stuff yourself with food but water is primarily responsible for bringing nutrients to the cells. Drinking several glasses of water a day ensures better metabolism and digestion, although drink the water between meals and not with meals, especially hot meals. Food is useless when it is not properly digested and eliminated by the body.

• Drink alcohol moderately. The kidney along with the liver is responsible for filtering unwanted substances in the body. Most of the unhealthy substances you put in your body system is part of your choice. So, if you burden your organs with dangerous substances aside from alcohol, health consequences are not far behind. Although to have a glass of red wine with your meal is not only just enjoyable also of benefit. Red wine is known for its antioxidants benefits, as well a substance found in red wine called Resveratol that acts as a calorie restriction mimic.

• Educate yourself. Learn about healthy eating habits by checking the new food pyramid. Better yet, consult a dietician or nutritionist, as well there is lots of information available to help making better food choices.

Every person has a unique nutritional need based on her or his genetics and existing lifestyle. Hence, a sound healthy eating plan begins by understanding your needs and your body. Listen to your body, take note of the reactions from your body, because no one else knows your body like you do. Aside from proper food intake, improved wellness is a certainty when pursuing an active lifestyle. You feel stronger and more energetic when you exercise. Couple a good workout program such as walking before breakfast with a healthy eating plan and you will see results in a short time. Obesity Related to Cancer: An Epidemic That Cannot Be Ignored


The rate of obesity has increased by more than 7.6% since 1994. Obesity has been a growing epidemic over the years, and it continues to become more and more prevalent. According to the National Cancer Society, obesity accounts for 25%-30% of several major cancers, colon, breast, kidney and esophagus.

But what causes obesity, and how can it be prevented? Many doctors say that obesity is very preventable and is inflicted by a poor diet, and physical inactivity.

Physical Inactivity

Physical inactivity is a major contribution to gaining weight, and becoming obese. Consistent overeating will cause significant weight gain, and without working out, there is no way for the body to balance and burn the excess calories. Physical activity has been proven to be deadly, and a major cause of obesity related to cancer. Doctors say that women who walk just 30 minutes per day reduce their chances for developing breast cancer by more than 20%. According to the National Cancer Institute, daily physical activity reduced chances for developing colon cancer by 50% overall, and even those who do 3-4 hours of exercise still significantly reduced their risk.

If you’re asking yourself, “how can I engage myself to be more physically active?” When starting a new workout regimen, it can be a bit intimidating, especially if you are new to working out. First: Start small. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so start with a morning or afternoon walk, or even a jog if you are up to it. The ideal amount of time to engage in physical activity is an hour per day, but if you can’t do that physically, or due to schedule then either break it up into two 30 minute sessions, or just start with 30 minutes per day. As you become more comfortable and confident with your new found exercise schedule, increase your times, and get into other forms of exercise like weights, and more advanced calisthenics. Working out can decrease chances of obesity related to cancer significantly, and is highly recommended.

Poor Diet

A poor diet is a main contributor of obesity. A poor diet consists of eating foods of high fat, and or cholesterol. All of which lead to obesity, causing cancer. Overeating, is also a main contributor of gaining weight and becoming obese.

“How can I combat obesity?” The first step is examining your daily diet, and recognizing which foods that you eat contain a lot of fat and, or cholesterol. Make steps to substitute these unhealthy foods for either fruits, vegetables, or some kind of healthy snack. Sticking to a consistent breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with snacks in between is an ideal eating schedule. By eating full meals spread out through the day, this keeps the body’s metabolism working, and successfully digesting food. By implementing a consistently healthy diet, this can reduce the chances of obesity related to cancer substantially.

By implementing a consistent workout regimen and supplementing this with a healthy diet, it can eliminate obesity all together. By eliminating obesity, it reduces the chances of cancer as a whole.

Obesity and Exercise


Obesity has increased significantly over the past few decades and it will continue to increase with time. Research shows obesity increases the risk of hypertension, sleep disorders, cancer, osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. The prevention of obesity is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Overeating and sedentary lifestyles have contributed to our obese society. Unfortunately, technology such as computers, television and other devices including cell phones has also contributed to make our society obese. This is because the recent technology has reduced our daily caloric expenditure. An example is the vast amount of time children spend playing video games. Although, this is an example for children, it may carry over to the amount of time adults spend on their computers. Most people are not spending enough time exercising but instead investing time into their technology.

Many people who lose in weight loss programs will gain the weight back within a year. This is usually because someone is being careful about the amount of calories and choices they make with food but not exercising enough. Research shows almost all people who start a weight loss will regain the weight within five years. Exercise is a crucial part of any weight loss program rather than diet alone.

The National Weight Control Registry studied a group of people who succeeded in a weight loss program. This was defined as people who lost thirty pounds and maintained it for one year. Four behaviors made these people successful in a weight loss program. The first part was eating well which consisted of a low fat but high carbohydrate diet. The second piece was weighing in everyday and self-monitoring of food intake and physical activity. The third component was eating breakfast everyday which will help kick start our metabolism and is also the most important meal of the day. The last element which I would consider to be the most important is very high levels of physical activity. This research defined physical activity as being sixty minutes long and moderate intensity.

Research shows there may be a psychological reason why people fail during a weight loss program. The reason consists of obese people lack will power and discipline to eat less and exercise more. There is no major evidence that this is true and they found obese people did not posses certain traits. They found no behavioral abnormalities or psychological disturbances as the reason for their obesity. However, the obese people did have a fixation with food and their physical activity slowed down.

Bariatric surgery for people with morbid obesity is on the rise. This surgery does usually help to keep and maintain the weight off since people usually eat much less than they previously did. Gastric bypass and lap band surgery has grown in popularity especially since a few celebrities have had this performed. Al Roker from the today show lost weight through surgery. Everyone is not qualified to have this type of surgery and there always health risks involved. Unfortunately, research shows it may be dangerous and death is a possibility. In some cases, the risks may outweigh the benefits. A doctor is the only person that can determine if it is right for someone. I do not encourage or recommend surgery; however it is a personal choice. Exercise would seem more logical for weight loss but some people may disagree.

Exercise and eating right is the best and safest way for someone to lose weight. I would encourage anyone obese to seek out a fitness professional to help them get on track. Most doctors would also encourage exercise but anyone obese needs to get the doctor’s approval first before beginning an exercise program. As a personal trainer for several years, I have helped obese clients lose weight. It is important that the diet and exercise program is customized to suit the client’s needs. A lifestyle change is essential to ensure successful and permanent weight loss.

Obesity is a Trojan Horse


One of my college professors often used to make these comments:

Take your breakfast alone; share your lunch with someone; offer your dinner to your enemy. I once replied back that the kind of food they served in our college canteen, all the three were to be offered to enemies only. Jokes apart,the common belief and habit for most of us to shed extra weight is to starve, depriving nutrition and energy to the body for its activities. In any case, starvation is not the salvation for permanent weight loss. Sooner or later when we get bored, we return back to our sedentary life style, without being aware of the health hazards of being obese.

Obesity is a trojan horse. It brings a battalion of ailments which are most detrimental to our health. To name a few, following are the complications that could arise out being obese.

1. Hypertension

2. Diabetes (Type-2)

3. coronary heart disease

4. Stroke

5. Gallbladder disease

6. osteoarthritis

7. asthma

8. sleep apnea and respiratory problems

9. some cancers ( endometrial, breast and colon )

10. High levels of cholosterol

This is an unending list, where each of the above ailments are capable of creating other complications, where no medication without side effect, could be comfortably used. Prevention is the best cure for obesity. How to achieve this?

My friend, who was obese, went to the doctor. Doctor smiled at my friend, since he was known to both of us. He said to my friend that it was very simple to lose weight! My friend became very interested and asked him to suggest the way. Doctor replied that my friend has to only shake his head from left to right, maybe 10 times a day, and he was sure to lose weight! My friend became very curious. What is the idea ? he enquired. Doctor calmly replied, “whenever anyone offers you something to eat, shake your head from left to right.” Simple, isn’t it? It is simple, but it requires discipline, which is not simple. But then, habit makes discipline. Avoiding junk food and fast food must be done with a discipline.

Besides, exercise is the best option to increase muscular mass and reduce fat. It also increases the metabolic rate and ensures high level of energy and enthusiasm.

Chromium, a hard, odorless, and tasteless metal that is used to tan leather, make rubies red, and manufacture magnetic tape, is required in trace amounts for sugar metabolism in humans. Because of its ability to burn carbohydrates and fats and its potential role in curbing food cravings, chromium is a popular slimming aid. In one study, six weeks of chromium supplementation resulted in a significant decrease in body fat among athletes. In another, 20 micrograms of chromium daily led to weight loss even without changes in food intake and exercise. A recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 180 subjects with type 2 diabetes in China demonstrated that high chromium supplementation improved insulin and cholesterol levels.

Obesity: How Our Busyness Contributes


We all know the difficulty of being overweight. It’s hard on our health, hard on our self-esteem, hard on our wardrobe. However, do you know it’s hard not to be fat in the times during which we live? We are assaulted from all sides (insofar as our weight is concerned). For example, who has time to cook? We are all overloaded and overwhelmed just getting through the day. You work all day and by the time you get home, you’re exhausted, the kids need help with their homework, you’ve got to get a report finished by morning, you have to wash or nobody will have anything to wear tomorrow… and the cat is vomiting!

Egads! Can anybody even expect you to cook? Solution to above dilemma: fast food, of course. We might just as well call it “fat food”. Most of the offerings, food-wise, on the “outside” are high in fat, sugar, salt, preservatives, additives, and calories. And it’s a case of the worse it gets, the worse it gets, because as our taste buds get overstimulated with the bad things just mentioned, we’re not satisfied anymore with foods that don’t taste like fast foods… everything just tastes too bland!

It’s almost as though our food has become nothing more than a vehicle to transport fat and calories to our mouths (and hips)! Portions are out of control! Have you noticed that restaurants are competing with each other by portion size? Sizes are described using words like large, extra large, king, giant, grande, huge, mega, “gi-normous” and so on. Even if the enormity isn’t specifically advertised, most places just assume that we want enough on our plates to feed a small country! Every social occasion involves food! Have you noticed? You can’t even go to a planning committee meeting on world hunger without being offered coffee, tea, Coke, cake, candy, pie, cookies, chips, and all sorts of munchies!

Why do we have to eat all the time? It’s a habit. That’s why! Yes, food is indeed enjoyable, but we’re killing ourselves, folks! We go to a movie and practically need a U-haul to drag all of our snacks to our chairs… again, mindless eating! We’ve paid a small fortune to watch a two hour movie and then spend again as much for snacks when we’re not even hungry, and further, don’t even enjoy because we’re totally watching the movie while we’re “stuffing stuff” down, a bad habit that we’ve all fallen into.

Bad news, good news? Bad news… we must change our lifestyle habits because we’re all getting sick. Good news… we can do it! I’m going to give you some tips on how to do that in a future article. Together, we can, and will, do this thing!

Globalisation and Childhood Obesity


Having just returned to the UK after having spent a week in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a week in Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovenia, it has once again opened my eyes to the huge contrast between the way of living in different countries.

I was pleasantly surprised by how active and healthy the people from especially Crotia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovenia seemed to be. While I was there I did not notice many overweight and/ or obese people and it seemed as if the locals used public transport and/or walked a lot more than in many other countries. Especially compared to the UAE where the majority of people own their own car and drive EVERYWHERE.

Another observation I made was the limited number of fast food chains and stores that I came across in Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovenia, again in comparison to the UAE and even the UK. I only saw TWO McDonalds, no Costa Coffee, Starbucks, Burger King or Kentucky Fried Chicken (of course there probably are more, but compared to the UAE where there are hundreds of fast food chains/stores all over the place, they were either surprisingly well hidden or very few of them in these three countries). In addition, there were also very few fast food banners and advertising on the streets in the three previously mentioned countries.

As a health professional and being the out-going and curious person that I am, I’m always very interested to hear about the lifestyle in the different countries that I visit. Therefore, when I travel I usually make contact to some of the locals to see and hear how they live.

People in Croatia were friendly, open-minded and generally spoke very good English, so it was fairly easy for me to get in contact with people. I spoke to quite a few people in shops, on the street and in restaurants, and I ended up having some very nice and interesting conversations about health, food and life in general. Also, in Bosnia-Herzegovenia I tried talking to people. However, it was a bit harder for me as not many people spoke English or at least very good English. But I still managed to find two very nice and friendly people who I had some interesting conversations with. Surprisingly, it was very similar things the people from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovenia told me when I asked them about food/fast food and eating out. They all mentioned that going out to eat only happens on rare occasions and that people generally cook their own food at home. I was so happy when I heard this as this is how I grew up and how I believe it should be. When I was a child we only went to McDonalds on special occasions, such as birthdays and we were only allowed candy on weekends. However, this has in the majority of homes and countries changed, and now fast food, candy, ice cream, soda etc. is an everyday food and no longer a treat.

However, the people that I spoke to did mention that the younger generation has started to change and fast food is becoming increasingly more popular. Therefore, a prevalence in adolescent obesity has been witnessed within the last decade.This change is not only due to economic growth but also the advances in technology and the impact of the media which all form part of the increasing globalisation.

Just look at the UAE. There is an unbelieveable amount of wealth in this country, but on the contrary they are facing a huge crisis in the number of children who are overweight and / or obese as it is suggested that a third of the children in the UAE are either overweight and / or obese. In addition, they rank the second highest in the world for the prevalence of diabetes. So much for being a wealthy nation!

Obesity is generally a sensitive topic and especially when discussing childhood obesity as parents either tend to not want to admit that their child is overweight or obese or they basically cannot see it. However, in the UAE one is perceived as “healthy” when he or she is overweight which therefore makes it difficult to change public perception of what constitutes to being a healthy weight and what overweight or obesity is. Campaigns and strategies have started to be implemented to combat childhood obesity and put more awareness on the rising importance of nutrition and physical activity, but there is still a long way to go.

Childhood obesity is increasing in large parts of the world and has become part of the globalisation. We therefore need to stop, think and act on this before it gets out of hand, as obesity often is related to other co-morbidites such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease etc. which can not only decrease one’s happiness but more importantly one’s life expectancy.

Obesity is a condition that results from the accumulation of excess fat in the body. In general, a person has obesity when the weight of the person is 20 percent or more above the normal recommended weight based on the person's height, age, sex and build or bone structure.
There is what is called the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure of body fat, calculated using a formula that requires the height and the weight of an adult (either man or woman). Persons with a BMI of less than 18.5 are underweight. A person is considered to be of normal weight if his or her BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9; overweight if the BMI is between 25 and 29.9; and obese if it is 30 and above. If the BMI is 40 or exceeds 40, then the person is said to be morbidly obese.

The accumulation of too much fat in the body, leads to serious health risks, including death in severe cases of obesity, especially morbid obesity. Therefore, irrespective of the causes of obesity, it is essential for obese people to take suitable steps for losing as much weight as is necessary to bring it to the level of normal BMI.

Ingestion of honey is an excellent home remedy for obesity. 10 grams of honey should be taken with hot water while starting and the doze can be increased with the time.

Cabbage is considered to be an effective home remedy for obesity. It contains a valuable content called tartroric acid, which inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat.

It is recommended to have more protein as weight loss is often accompanied by loss of protein tissue as well as fat tissue. About 20 percent of the total energy should be provided from proteins like low fat milk and whole pulses. Fats should provide 20 percent of the total energy. Fried foods like chips should be avoided. Fresh juices, water and lemon drinks are good as they contain fewer calories.

Drink a glass of fruit or vegetable juice after your meals. These juice drinks contains high fiber and it will help to absorb the excess fat in your stomach.
